How Community Vision Brought Trefawr Solar to Life

In the world of renewable energy, "grid constraints" are often the final word on a project's viability. However, the Trefawr Solar Array in Wales has challenged that narrative, and we can now proudly announce that it is up!

The Trefawr Solar Array is a 525kWp ground-mounted solar development. At its core, this project has been a masterclass in "smart" integration, utilising a G100 grid arrangement to share a single connection with a neighbouring 900kW wind turbine. In an era where local grid constraints often stall green ambitions, Trefawr bypasses the need for costly new infrastructure by using an intelligent export limitation system. This ensures that the sun and wind work in harmony, maximising the 700kW export cap without ever overloading the system. It is a pragmatic, efficient model that offers a clear blueprint for renewable deployment in even the most restricted corners of the countryside.

The array has proved that technical limitations are often just invitations for better design.

The journey to completion has been one of persistence, transition, and community spirit. The project’s foundations were laid by the late Daniel Blackburn and his colleague Alex Ferraro, who navigated the precarious early development phase without secured capital. Their vision was kept alive through the critical support of the Welsh Government Energy Service, which provided the grants necessary to secure planning permission and finalise technical feasibility.

When Michael Shakib later stepped in to lead the project through its construction phase, he inherited a platform built on years of collaborative effort with Dulas Engineering and Pembrokeshire County Council. The road to financial stability required similar tenacity; after an initial setback with Ynni Cymru, a refined proposal eventually secured majority funding, bolstered by a loan from the Development Bank of Wales and additional redress funding to see the project through to its final commissioning.

Beyond the high-tech engineering and financial modelling, Trefawr remains deeply rooted in the local soil. While major players like Vital Energi and Empowered provided the overarching technical expertise, the project prioritised Welsh hands for the essential details of the site. Local specialists were brought in to handle everything from site fencing by Malcolm Evans to the sophisticated drainage planning provided by Mike Wyatt of MW Consult Ltd. Even the environmental footprint was a local affair, with Duncan Winton of TreesandTimber.co.uk leading the biodiversity enhancements and tree planting efforts. This commitment ensures that the array does more than just produce green electricity; it actively enriches the local economy and the surrounding ecosystem.

As the Trefawr Solar Array nears its completion, it stands as a sophisticated tribute to the early work of Daniel Blackburn. It represents a successful marriage of public sector support and private sector innovation, proving that community-focused energy projects can be both technically advanced and deeply personal. By turning a constrained grid into a shared resource, Trefawr isn't just powering homes—it is demonstrating that with the right mix of smart technology and local collaboration, the path to a sustainable future is well within our reach.
