Perimenopause and menopause can feel like a turbulent time. From physical exhaustion and disturbed sleep to anxiety and brain fog, the symptoms often leave women feeling completely unlike themselves. These shifts frequently happen when life is already demanding, balancing work, family, caring responsibilities, and looking after everyone else. Too often, women navigate this transition without the time or space to understand what is happening, or feel isolated without a safe outlet to talk openly.

To offer a breathing space, community benefit society Cwm Arian is hosting a free day retreat, Among the Trees, under the Preseli Woodlands Project. Taking place in the beautiful, ancient canopy of Pengelli Forest, near Eglwyswrw, this retreat invites women experiencing perimenopause or menopause to slow down, step into nature, and connect with others on a similar journey.
Led by psychotherapist Heather Sanderson, the day offers a blend of quiet reflection and gentle community support. Participants will have time to take unhurried walks through the woods, sit quietly, and enjoy time alone in nature. There will also be a gently facilitated sharing circle to discuss experiences with no pressure to speak unless comfortable doing so, as well as an opportunity to consider what better local support could look like across Pembrokeshire.
Heather Sanderson explains that perimenopause and menopause can affect our emotions, relationships, confidence, and sense of identity. Being outdoors gives us space to slow down and notice what we need. It is an opportunity to pause, spend time outdoors, and be with
others who understand.

Spending time in nature is increasingly recognised as a vital tool for emotional wellbeing. The sights, sounds, and rhythms of the woodland help bring focus back to the present, reducing stress and easing the mental noise of everyday expectations. While every woman’s experience of menopause is unique, coming together in a serene, natural environment helps strip away the isolation that so often surrounds it.
The retreat takes place on Friday 4 September 2026 from 10.00 am to 2.30 pm at Pengelli Forest in North Pembrokeshire. The event is free to attend, but booking is essential as spaces are limited to ensure a peaceful and personal experience. To reserve a place, please email sophie@cwmarian.org.uk.
This event is delivered by Cwm Arian as part of the Preseli Woodlands Project, in partnership with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. The project is funded through the Welsh Government’s National Forest for Wales Landscape Scheme 2025–2027, administered by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action.
