Exciting News: Coppice Plot Opportunity at Pengelli Woods!

Cwm Arian is proud to announce an exciting new coppice plot pilot project as part of our Coedwigoedd Bro Preseli project, delivered in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW) and Coppicewood College.
We are offering a unique opportunity to access and manage 1/4 acre coppice plots in the beautiful ancient oak woodland of Pengelli Woods for the upcoming 2026–2027 season (running from late September 2026 to the end of March 2027).
Whether you are just starting out on your coppicing journey or are an experienced cutter looking for woodland access, this facilitated pilot is designed to support your skills and growth.
What Does the Pilot Offer?
1/4 Acre Plot Access: Manage your own designated plot individually or collaboratively with a team at your own pace.
Dedicated Mentorship: Three structured mentoring sessions delivered by experienced Coppicewood College tutors:
Pre-season: Walkaround, plot assessment, and initial advice on your approach for the season.
Mid-season: Walkaround review to assess progress and refine techniques.
End of season: Final evaluation, walkaround, and feedback.
Keep Your Timber: All wood felled through your plot management is yours to extract and keep (e.g., for firewood, crafts, or business trials).
Hand Tool Ethos: Work in an independent, supported environment following the hand-tool-only ethos taught by Coppicewood College.
What We Expect From You
Work your plot with the long-term health and management plan of Pengelli Woods at heart.
Self-manage your time and resources to ensure the plot is fully worked and clear by the end of March 2027.
Provide your own tools, PPE, safety gear, first aid certificate, and insurance cover.
Keep materials tidy and trackside-ready for extraction, taking responsibility for your own extraction costs.
Take part in a short evaluation interview with Cwm Arian colleagues to help us measure the success of the pilot.
How to Apply
Plots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to Coppicewood College alumni until Wednesday, 12th August 2026.
A £100 refundable deposit is required to confirm your plot placement, which will be returned at the end of the season upon successful completion of your final mentoring session and site clearance.
