Met Mast erected to measure the wind!
07.09.2011
After a long wait for planning to be granted, the Cwm Arian met mast has finally been raised.
The mast will stand for a full year measuring the wind speeds and directions to see if the site is suitable for a wind turbine in the future. The data will then be used for best practice monitoring of potential noise from a wind turbine.
The Power of Water - Hydro History in Hermon!
05.04.2011
The sun brought out a bumper turnout of walkers in Hermon 2 weeks ago when 50 people arrived for a guided walk through mud, snowdrops and local history. They discovered several ruined cottages, disused waterwheels and a leat and learned that water was one of the first resources harnessed to bring power into rural homes locally.
The walk was followed by an interesting slideshow on the ‘Archimedes Screw’ and other modern water turbines being installed in the area. Over tea and home baking the audience learnt about the new government incentives (called Feed in Tariffs or FITs).
“Its amazing – I could have my savings returned in 7 years and start making a good profit. Its better than leaving them in the bank.” said local resident Mr Tomos.
The FITs now make small scale hydro, wind and photo voltaic installations a viable and lucrative investment for householders and farmers, reaping good profits in a few short years. The event was organised by Cwm Arian Renewable Energy project funded by the Low Carbon Communities Challenge.
For more project information see www.cwmarian.org.uk and visit Eco Centre Wales, in Newport for impartial general advice about renewables and the government incentives.

On the theme of transport... Fishguard Trains Petition
01.02.2011
Tomorrow night is Cwm Arian Renewable Energy's Transport Workshop (see below), and on the theme of local transport the Fishguard Trains Petition has been brought to our attention. It's a very worthwhile campaign to get more trains to the fishguard station- shockingly there are only 2 trains per 24 hours! Having more trains would promote toursim and get more people using the ferry.
Cwm Arian Renewable Energy have organized a transport workshop, with a free buffet supper, to give information on saving money and the environment by using transport more efficiently. Everyone's welcome, so come along and join in if you can!
Cwm Arian Renewable Energy Film
23.01.2011
A short film has been produced for the Cwm Arian Renewable Energy project, which focusses on the "Challenges faced". It's a rather strange film, as we've not really faced any challenges from the community to date - the project was born from consultation with the community. This will periodically be followed by further films on all aspects of the project.
